How do live online lessons work?

All lessons are held via Zoom with video conferencing in real time. There are no subscriptions or lessons at Forest of Sound that use pre-recorded videos. Aside from the instructor being on Zoom, there is essentially no difference for the student in comparison to in person lessons.

Additionally, each of our students will recieve customized lesson notes which are updated on a weekly basis via google docs. The lesson notes function as a record of homework and practice, as well as helping students and parents to keep track of the progress made from lesson to lesson!

We operate on a semester basis, all the lessons are scheduled in advance and each student will secure a recurring weekly time slot to ensure a consistent and efficient learning experience. Our lessons are conducted individually with basic resources - two portable devices, an instrument and a reliable internet connection is the only requirement.

The student/parent may schedule a complimentary 15 minute consultation, in order to try the setup and feel of the lessons. The result is inspiring, quality music lessons without the costs or expense of time that travel demands. Please refer to the testimonials section about our success with instruction online.

How long should my lessons be:
30, 45, or 60 minutes?

30-minute lessons: We recommend 30-minute lessons for younger beginners in their first year of music study. As they progress, they may find that they are better suited for 45-minute lessons.

45-minute lessons: For most students we recommend a 45-minute lesson because it gives enough time to review/correct any necessary material from the previous week, while still leaving time to cover new material for students who may not yet be independent enough to learn and practice by themselves.

In the early stages of learning, students generally learn faster and with better retention if their lesson time allows them to work with their teacher on a new piece together and allow time for the teacher to demonstrate the required techniques during the lesson. This will establish a solid foundation for future learning and playing. The student can then practice at home to consolidate and actually enjoy the piece and progress, as opposed to feeling frustrated and struggling with reading and practicing from scratch all by themselves during the week.

We find that with this approach, the student feels empowered to put into practice what they have learned, and the balance between lesson and practice is shifted. This puts less pressure of independent learning in the early stages of musical development, giving sufficient space for a love of music to take root.

60-minute lessons: We recommend 60-minute lessons for any student who wishes to truly maximize their lesson time and get more in depth with the study, resulting in more advanced progress.

We encourage you to take the lesson length that works best for your needs!
