In-Person and Online Music Lessons

Lessons at Forest of Sound are either held via Zoom with real-time video conferencing or in person at our studio in San Gabriel, Los Angeles. We do not use pre-recorded videos or subscriptions—whether online or in-person, every lesson is live and customized to the student. Aside from the format, the experience for students remains equally enriching in both settings.

Additionally, each student receives personalized lesson notes, updated weekly via Google Docs. These notes serve as a record of homework and practice, helping students and parents keep track of progress from lesson to lesson.

We operate on a semester basis, with all lessons scheduled in advance to secure a consistent, recurring weekly time slot for each student. Whether online or in-person, this ensures an efficient and structured learning experience. For online lessons, all you need are are your instrument, two portable devices (phones, tablets, laptops or desktops), and a reliable internet connection.

Parents and students can also schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation to get a feel for the setup and teaching style. Whether in-person at our San Gabriel studio or online from the comfort of your own home, the result is inspiring, quality music lessons.

How long should my lessons be:
30, 45, or 60 minutes?

30-minute lessons: Ideal for younger beginners in their first year of music study. As they progress, they may find that they are better suited for 45-minute lessons.

45-minute lessons: A perfect transition for students progressing from 30-minute lessons but not quite ready for a full hour. These sessions offer additional time for review and learning. As students enhance their skills and concentration, they will be well-prepared to move up to 60-minute lessons for even greater progress.

60-minute lessons: For most students, we highly recommend 60-minute lessons. This extended duration provides ample time to maximize their learning experience and delve deeper into their studies, leading to more advanced progress.

During these sessions, there’s enough time to review and correct any necessary material from the previous week, while still covering new material for students who may not yet be fully independent in their learning and practice.

In the early stages of learning, students benefit greatly from working closely with their teacher on new pieces and techniques during the lesson. This collaborative approach establishes a solid foundation for future learning and playing. Students can then practice at home with confidence and enjoyment, rather than feeling overwhelmed with independent study.

This approach empowers students to put into practice what they've learned and creates a balanced dynamic between lesson and practice. It reduces the pressure of independent learning in the early stages, allowing a genuine love for music to flourish.

We encourage you to take the lesson length that works best for your needs!
